Headteacher Message

Hello all,

Basically, I have not eaten since yesterday.  Here is why!

The weather decided to relent, and our community came together to celebrate diversity being the strength of the school. There was food from all around the world on offer, and many of you took up the offer of “free food, no washing up.” And why not? If you can feed the kids before getting home, you have created more time in the evening for yourself.  I want to say a big thank you to the parents and staff association (PSA) for organising this feast and especially to those who selflessly bought and made food for the community.  As a locally raised person, I love the diversity of the school and how we prove that it doesn’t matter where you come from at Darell; who you are counts. Kindness was very much evident throughout the afternoon.

Next week, I am going to have to send quite a serious email regarding the new government regulations regarding attendance and the consequences of prolonged absence. I have chosen not to do this in the newsletter because I wanted to use this space to say that while punitive measures have been introduced, we, as a school, want to work with you to support you with any issues regarding attendance. Please contact us if you would like any support or guidance regarding this.

Have a lovely weekend with your family. I am really looking forward to spending time with mine (if they let me!)

Joe Porter

School Governor Vacancy

Darell Primary School has a Governing Board dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for all our pupils. Some of us are parents of children currently in the school, some of us have had children attend the school in the past, some of us live locally, some of us live far away and some of us had no connection with Darell originally but want to make a difference to our community. We now have a vacancy for a Parent Governor which is an exciting opportunity to join our Board.

Schools have governors to ensure the smooth and effective running of a school and to ensure the headteacher is held to account. Governors oversee the management side of the school. They ensure strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing are all organised in the best way possible.

A governing board is made up of a diverse group of people who bring a wide range of skills and expertise from their own lives (not just from within education). They use those skills to benefit the school. They also get involved in the wider school community, playing the role of critical friend to Mr Porter and other senior leaders.

Fantastic reasons to become a school governor include:

  • Being a school governor is rewarding - you give back and make a different to the young people at Darell. It’s a big responsibility but you will know you are truly having an impact on the next generation, supporting them in their educational journey.
  • You gain a variety of skills - a survey conducted by City of London Governor found that volunteering for Governorship helped build respondent’s self-confidence, well-being, job satisfaction and motivation
  • Networking Opportunities - Governing Boards should be diverse by design and, as a result, present lots of opportunities for networking and meeting new people who have similar values to you.
  • Gain knowledge for your school - You can gain invaluable insight from the governing board about how school communities run.
  • Be part of the wider community - You will also get the chance to know the wider neighbourhood. Darell is the heart of the community and this gives you the chance to meet other people who care hugely about the future of the children and the area.

Does that sound like you? If you are a parent/carer of a child currently attending Darell Primary and Nursery School and would be interested in becoming a Parent Governor please give your name and contact details to the school office or email clerk@darell.Richmond.sch.uk We would be particularly interested to hear from applicants with a background in education.

Moving up to secondary school in September

Applications for September 2025 start

Children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 are due to start Year 7 at secondary school in September 2025.

Applications open on Sunday 1 September 2024 and will close on Thursday 31 October 2024.

You must apply through the local authority which is responsible for administering the council tax for your home even if you intend to name a school located in another area.

We require a separate application for each child if you are applying for children of a multiple birth.

Tell us in your application if your child has a brother or sister (sibling) who will still be attending your preferred school(s) in September 2025. This is so we can apply the appropriate priority.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - If you could only keep one toy, which one would it be? Why is it so special?

Peake - Can you think of three words to describe how Matt might have felt when he realised he had lost the Everywhere Bear? Have you ever lost something special to you? What advice would you give to someone who had lost something?

Weir - What is your favourite poem and why?

Thunberg - What do you predict the girl will do with the bag of seeds? How do you think this will change the city and the mean, hard and ugly people who live there?

Darwin - Is it better to make lots of mistakes and to learn from them, or to make no mistakes at all?

Attenborough - How did the author create suspense in chapter 10, when the search party entered the deserted village of Gris and were ambushed?

Parks - ‘Street Child’ – How were the children punished in the workhouse? Do you agree or disagree with this type of discipline? Why?
