Headteacher Message

Dear all,

Happy new year! 2024, the year of the Darell.  Well, why not? It has been so lovely welcoming back your children this week. For sure, there have been some sleepy heads, but the school has been an incredibly calm and hard-working environment.  Long may that continue.

This week I introduced our assembly focus for the term.  Very simply, our focus this term is kindness. It relates to our responsibility value. “We take responsibility for our behaviour.  We are kind and caring to ourselves and others.”

This focus has not just been plucked from mid-air.  There are two reasons why it has been chosen.  There is a lot of negative news at the moment and I feel that having a focus on kindness in school opens up a world of positivity and creates the right environment for our children to thrive.  Secondly, there is scientific evidence that small acts of kindness can improve mental health, improve relationships and also boost your immune system.   Here is a link to a radio programme that expands on this.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank you for your patience regarding the receptionist position at school.  I was on the front desk yesterday morning and I have to say Lara made it look easy.  We have another round of interviews on Tuesday, so hopefully I will have some good news next week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.  Stay safe and be kind.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - In our story, Barbara Throws a Wobbler, why does Barbara throw a wobbler? (sock problem, strange pea, stepping on a crack, dropping her ice cream) What is the wobbler made from? (all her upset and angry feelings) How does she 'unmake' the wobbler? (stops shouting, has a think about the problems, and squishes down the feelings until they disappear)

Peake - What problem does Floyd face at the beginning of the story? (his kite gets stuck in a tree) How does Floyd try to solve his problem at first? (he throws his shoe into the tree) Can you remember any of the other objects that Floyd threw into the tree?

Weir - How would you feel if you were Snow White and your father married the wicked stepmother?

Thunberg - Did the story of Nen and the Lonely Fishman remind you of any other stories? Which ones and why?

Darwin - Why are trees important to the environment? What can we use trees for?

Attenborough - Where do you think will the Shadow Moth lead the girls? What is it that Zuby wants the moth to help him with?

Parks - What are the four children called, and why were they living with the professor?
