Headteacher Message

Hello all,

We do not do things by halves in our house. (That would be tricky as there are 5 of us but I suppose you could count Blue).  All five of us have tested positive in the last few days.  Not much fun and extremely difficult yesterday when I could not be at school for an external review I spoke about last week.  With both myself and Emma Claridge off, it was left to the capable hands of Paul Gilbert, Amanda Blunden and all the other leaders this school is lucky enough to have to showcase the school.  It was an extremely useful process and further informs our planning for next Year.  What it did highlight was the excellent teaching taking place across the school from Nursery all the way to Year 6.  I mentioned last week that we had no responses to our OFSTED parent view page and I would like to thank all of you who navigated the faffy sign up procedure and logged on to share your thoughts.  This is really useful feedback.  What we will do is send out an internal parent questionnaire that is easier for you to work and gather more feedback as we look to next year.  We always want to develop and improve and your feedback is invaluable in this process.

What we can reflect on is some quite incredible SATs results for Year 6.  They are way, way above national averages and show the hard work that these children and all the staff that have taught them have put in this year and, throughout their journey at Darell School.  We will be sharing these in more detail next week after reports have gone out and Year 6 parents are aware of their results.  It really is something to celebrate and shout from the rooftops. You can be a warm welcoming and nurturing school and still achieve extremely well academically.  These results will also show the value we add over time. Maybe this message is getting into the community like it should.  Our Reception cohort  is now expected to be 25, the highest since I have been at the school and a sign that we are going in the right direction.  A chance to go full circle here.  We know we are not perfect and need to improve in areas but we are moving rapidly in the right direction and your feedback will help us to further improve.

I will be back in on Monday to enjoy the last two weeks with your children.  Take relevant sun precautions and have a lovely weekend.

Student Wellbeing Update Issue 1 – Stanborough Primary SchoolWellbeing

Relaxation Activity: Stress Balls

This exercise releases muscle tension and massages your hands. Make your own stress ball(s) by filling balloons with dry lentils or rice.

  •  Take the ball(s) in one or both hands and squeeze and release.
  •  Experiment with squeezing the ball. Find a way that is right for you, adjusting the speed, pressure and timing of your squeezes to whatever way you like.

The Reading Corner

Welcome to our weekly section of the newsletter all about reading. Every week, we will share a question (or two) with you about the book your child is reading in school. Please use these questions to help you find out a little more about what your child has been reading in school and continue to develop their love of reading.

Wonder - What have you invented?

Peake - What would you do if you found a giant egg on your doorstep? How would you look after it? What would you hope to find inside when it hatches?

Weir - Do you think Floella and her family are going to like England? Why? Why not?

Walker - Why could the Bog Baby not fly?

Newton - What happened to Fox at the end of the story?

Thunberg - What do you think will happen to Roz and her new family?

Darwin - Macavity was a mystery cat. What sort of cat would you like to write a poem about?

Attenborough -  Can you think of a better ending to the poem?

Parks - What have we learnt about the protagonist of our story so far?

Smartwatches / Fitness trackers

Check what the smartwatch allows your child to do and if
available, set appropriate restrictions. Talk to your child
about the different settings and if you have, why you have
set up the restrictions.

What are the risks?

  •  Some smartwatches allow you to take photos. It is important to talk to your child about appropriate behaviour when taking and sharing photos. Once a photo is shared, they lose control of it.
  • Some smartwatches have internet access with the ability to download

apps. You need to be aware of the potential of in app purchases and viewing
upsetting content.
Depending on the brand of smartwatch, you may be able to set up parental
controls for example to restrict content and prevent purchases. More
information about Apple Watch parental controls can be found here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/watch/apd54d0a51fb/watchos

As always, ensure your child knows to talk to you or another trusted adult should they see anything inappropriate or that worries them whilst using their device.
